Saxony-Anhalt

“Saxony-Anhalt has great potential to offer in the testing of new approaches to the energy transition. The focus here lies on solutions for intelligent energy production and distribution as well as for intelligent energy utilisation and flexible load management at the large industrial sites of the state.”

Energy Transition In Saxony-Anhalt

The energy policy of the state government of Saxony-Anhalt is based on a commitment to playing a leading role in the expansion of renewable energy. With a share of renewable energy in the gross electricity consumption exceeding 70 percent, the federal goals for 2035 were already surpassed in 2015. The state government is particularly focused on establishing reliable conditions to support the successful implementation of the energy transition.

Saxony-Anhalt prefers cross-sector solutions for the further integration of renewable energy into the energy system. The focus lies on system integration of renewable energy through sector coupling, the development and expansion of storage technologies and the expansion of grid infrastructure. Alongside the research and development of technical solutions by local research institutions, universities and innovative companies, it is also necessary to establish the requisite framework conditions.

Digitalisation has a key role to play in the successful transformation of our energy system to support highly fluctuating electricity production. The WindNODE joint project addresses central challenges of the energy transition such as system integration, flexibility, security of supply and system stability, placing it in line with the energy policy objectives of the state government.

With its dual role as a traditional energy and industry region and a region of renewable energy, Saxony-Anhalt is a good example of the challenges associated with the retooling of our energy system. The state therefore offers ideal conditions for testing the practical suitability of model solutions for a future-proof energy supply under real conditions.

“Saxony-Anhalt has a clear energy and climate policy goal: 100-percent supply with renewable energy in the areas of electricity, heat and transportation. This requires the step-by-step transformation of the energy supply system to achieve greater flexibility in consumption and production, including the use of cross-sector approaches. Electricity production from wind power will play a key role in the energy transition, even at the national level. Wind power is also of great importance to Saxony-Anhalt as a business location. The WindNODE joint project will deliver practical solutions to continue the successful development of the energy transition process.

With its historically industrial character and the chemical site Leuna, the state of Saxony-Anhalt offers the ideal conditions for the investigation and testing of new approaches. The resulting insights into practical application can then act as important drivers of the successful transformation of our energy system within the context of the broader expansion of wind power. Our new climate and energy concept for the state of Saxony-Anhalt also places special importance on the system integration of wind energy.”
