Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

“ Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is strong in renewable energy. We already contribute substancially to the energy transition exporting electricity primarily produced by windpower, onshore as well as offshore. To advance the energy transition in the future as well, we must integrate renewable energy even more efficiently into the energy system –especially regarding production fluctuations and grid congestions in times of high supply. This is what makes the WindNODE joint project so important and exciting.”

Energy Transition In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The expansion of renewable energy plays a central role for the energy transition. Since 2013, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has been the first German state in which the renewable power generation exceeded the demand for electricity. However, despite this green power surplus at the annual bottom line, there are still times where wind and sun could not cover the current power demand. It is thus not sufficient to simply produce electricity. To achieve the target of the exclusive or at least primary use of volatile energy sources in the energy supply of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, we need storage technologies and other solutions as well. The energy transition therefore requires a transformation of the entire system.

As a state already generating more than 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, we aim to leverage the energy transition to transform the mobility and heat sectors and create new connections with the electricity sector. By linking sectors we open the way to combine economic growth with climate protection. First and foremost, this creates the opportunity to implement the energy transition holistically.

One essential goal of the energy policy of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania is to become an export region for renewable energy. This makes a showcase region like WindNODE particularly attractive to us, connecting the large centres of energy consumption and generation in northeastern Germany with intelligent regional electricity concepts. By implementing innovative pilot projects, our region can develop into a role model for a comprehensive and sustainable energy transition in all sectors.

For Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the digitalisation of the energy industry represents perhaps the greatest economic opportunity to advance industrial development. Intelligent energy supply concepts create highly paid jobs for highly qualified workers and play an important role in developing the economy of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania at once.

A successful energy transition depends on close cooperation between everyone involved: energy consumers, businesses, policymakers, interest groups and – not to forget – the experts in research and development. We want to push forward the energy transition rapidly and succeyfully. For we want our children to live in a healthy world in which they still have a future.
