Experimental Quarter Prenzlauer Berg Now a Visitor Site

On 6 November, a visitor site was opened in the heating plant of the experimental WindNODE quarter in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. Here, Wohnbaugenossenschaft Zentrum eG offers an insight into how the installations of a smart quarter that supports the grid are controlled, and shows which opportunities existing buildings can offer for the coupling of the electricity and heating sectors.

In this quarter, practical tests are conducted to find out whether and how residential areas and their technical energy installations can form part of a future, more flexible energy supply. Solutions are pursued that balance the generation and consumption of renewable electricity. To this end, the quarter was equipped with storage units and conversion options for excess renewable electricity (Power-to-Heat units), smart metering systems as well as accesses to energy industry platforms. These installations can serve to convert excess renewable electricity from the grid into heating energy, or to support the grid when not enough renewable energy is available. The connection to the platform furthermore makes it possible to test flexibility marketing at the city quarter level.
