„Strom zum Begreifen“: test run for the WindNODE board game

From transformers and power grids over roles and markets to fun and games: at WindNODE, the energy transition is highlighted from all sides. In the scope of our project "Strom zum Begreifen" (“Understanding Electricity”), Stromnetz Berlin is developing a board game that should explain the complex mechanisms and challenges of our energy system.

If you are now imagining a boring educational game that will just sit there on the shelf, you are mistaken. An experienced board game developer ensures that in addition to the content, a fair and fun gaming experience is also guaranteed. Just like the energy industry has done in real life, we say goodbye to Monopoly and turn to modern, cooperative ideas. Players shouldn't hope to monopolise all four train stations and bankrupt their fellow players; rather, they can stay ahead of their competitors by using their wits while also saving the environment.

A short practice round made it clear: firstly, we can still learn a lot about the energy transition, and much of it can be easily conveyed by the game. Secondly, acting together often offers advantages in the energy transition, even if quick wins tempt each individual player. Thirdly, the entire group, counting experienced board gamers and absolute newbies, insists on an early rematch!

Expect to try out the game for yourself early next year!
