WindNODE partners Lumenion, Gewobag and Vattenfall have launched a pilot project: a new sector-coupling steel-based storage system will absorb electricity from regional wind and solar power generation peaks. The renewable energy will later be used as heat and electricity. The project site is at Bottroper Weg in Berlin-Tegel.
The Lumenion steel storage technology can store renewable generation peaks for as little as 2 cents / kWh to store as thermal energy, at a temperature of up to 650 ° Celsius. The heat can be reconverted by means of a turbine unit if required - or used entirely as heat.
The pilot project in Berlin’s Tegel district will see a 2.4 megawatt-hour (MWh) memory block being tested for commercial use and being put into regular operation. To this end, the unit will be integrated with Vattenfall Energy Solutions' existing gas-fired combined heat and power plant. Together, both units will supply district heating and electricity for Gewobag's 70s multi-floor apartment building. The storage will temporarily pick up unneeded power surges and feed them into the heat supply when needed. In a second step, it is planned to reconvert the heat into electricity.
In parallel, Lumenion is already testing a 450 kWh prototype on the campus of the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) in Oberschöneweide. HTW supports Lumenion with practical accompanying research.
