„Given its exceptional situation as an energy transit state without large power plants and with high electricity imports, Thuringia is a particularly suited testing ground for solutions to increase the flexibility of the energy demand, smart grids and the integration of energy storage systems. With the showcase project, we hope to promote innovative technology applications and try out new future-oriented business models."
Bodo Ramelow, Minister-President of Thuringia
Energy transition in Thuringia
Energy policy is priority theme for the state government of Thuringia. The state stands for an energy transition that is decentralised, regional and renewable. This approach emphasises an ambitious goal: as of 2040, the Thuringian energy demand will be covered by a mix of renewable energy from own sources. This requires the development of renewable energy, an increase in energy efficiency, energy savings and sector coupling measures. The energy supply has to make a decisive contribution to achieving the climate targets. Nevertheless, it should not only be environmentally and climate-friendly, but also be affordable and secure in the long term. Only then it provides the necessary contribution to welfare and economic development.
Through a clever energy and climate policy, the state government wants to ensure that Thuringia is well-prepared for the future and will emerge even stronger from the transformation process. The energy transition offers the opportunity for innovation, value creation, competitive jobs and greater participation. The Thuringian state government exploits its leeway and provides many offers for the different target groups. For example, energy efficiency measures are subsidised for companies. The goal of the state government is to have as many players as possible directly benefit from the energy transition. This boosts support and acceptance.
The transformation of the energy system is a dynamic and complex process. Current challenges are the integration of renewables into the market, the flexibilisation of the energy offer and demand, the smart coupling of the electricity, heating, traffic and industry sectors as well as a fair distribution of the financial burden. In order to master these challenges, innovative and practical solutions are needed that prove themselves on the market and meet with acceptance. WindNODE can and should make an important contribution in this context. Hopefully, WindNODE will reach beyond the immediate project partners. Other projects should be developed and networking should follow from and around WindNODE. In the end, Thuringia expects that WindNODE will make an important contribution to a secure, affordable and climate-friendly energy supply and provide an impetus for the energy transition.
"Thuringia stands for a decentralised, regional and renewable energy supply. Our important energy policy goals present us with great challenges and offer many opportunities. The transformation of the energy system requires innovation, networking and information. WindNODE has the potential to create important impulses and push the energy transition forward."
