Energy transition in Saxony-Anhalt
The energy policy of the state government of Saxony-Anhalt is based on the commitment of the state to be a leader in the development of renewable energy. With a share of over 70 per cent of renewable energy in the gross electricity consumption, the federal targets for 2035 have already been met. The state government particularly advocates reliable framework conditions, so that the energy transition can be successfully organised.
Saxony-Anhalt prefers cross-sector solutions for the further integration of renewables in the energy system. The focus here is the system integration of renewables through sector coupling, the development and upgrading of storage technologies as well as the expansion of grid infrastructure. In addition to the research and development of technical solutions by local research institutions, universities and innovative companies, adequate framework conditions have to be created to this end.
Digitisation plays a key role for the successful implementation of the transformation process of our energy system towards a strongly fluctuating generation of electricity. The WindNODE partner project makes central challenges of the energy transition a topic of discussion, such as system integration, flexibility, security of supply and system stability and therefore features in the context of the energy policy targets of the state government.
With its double role of traditional energy and industry state as well as that of renewable energy state, Saxony-Anhalt is an example for the challenges linked to the transformation of our energy system. As such, the state offers an ideal setting to test the practicality of model solutions for a future-oriented energy supply under real conditions.
"Saxony-Anhalt has a clear target for its energy and climate policy: to supply the electricity, heating and mobility sectors with 100 % renewable energy. To this end, it requires the gradual transformation of the energy supply system towards greater flexibility in consumption and generation, including cross-sectoral approaches.
The electricity generated from wind power plays a key role in the energy transition, on a national scale. At the same time, wind power is of great importance for the economy of Saxony-Anhalt.
The WindNODE project will provide practical solution approaches for the further successful design of the energy transition process. The historical industrial character of Saxony-Anhalt and the Leuna chemical complex offer ideal conditions for model research and testing.
The findings can then be applied in practice, providing important incentives for the successful transformation of our energy system in the context of the further development of wind power.
When developing our new climate protection and energy concept for Saxony-Anhalt, the system integration of wind power is also of special importance."
