Short description of the project contribution

Development of a large-scale battery

With this project, BELECTRIC seeks to demonstrate the usefulness of large-scale batteries and expand the range of application of these storage systems. This should enable a sustainable increase of such installations in the middle term without subsidies. Advanced battery-specific operating models as well as joint operating models for batteries and renewables and their corresponding business models should be tested.

BELECTRIC is specifically working on the site development and planning for the integration of the large-scale battery, the prequalification and use of battery storage systems in the operating reserve pool, the quantification of new operating reserve services in connection with photovoltaic installations and wind turbines, the evaluation of battery-supported services within the distribution and transmission system.

The aim is to develop sustainable application fields for battery storage in various marketing models together with other technical units. The optimal use of the properties of battery storage systems should be the main focus. The fields of application to be identified in the scope of the project should be developed together with different players, such as installation operators, distribution and transmission system operators, in order to specify economically useful applications that improve or reduce costs for the operation of the distribution grid as well as system stability (frequency, voltage, black start). The battery should also be validated as the central technical unit in energy trading. This should ultimately benefit Germany and Europe as a whole.
