Smart energy transition: WindNODE is an “Landmark in the Land of Ideas” for 2018

Berlin. The partner project “WindNODE - showcasing smart energy systems from north-eastern Germany” is one of the winners of the competition for “Landmark in the Land of Ideas” of 2018. An independent jury chose WindNODE as one of 100 outstanding projects among almost 1,500 applications. In the scope of energy transition project WindNODE, 70 economical, industrial and scientific partners develop solutions for the smart energy system of the future.

Wind and solar power should supply Germany with electricity in the future; that is the goal of the energy transition. By its very nature, however, the electricity generated from renewable sources varies greatly depending on the weather and the time of day - a considerable burden on the electricity grids. A central question for the success of the energy transition is therefore: how can renewable energy be used at the time it is available, and how can the time gaps be bridged when it is not?

This is where the WindNODE project comes in: over 70 partners develop common solutions in the pilot region of eastern Germany in the scope of 50 subprojects with a view to maintain the balance between generation and consumption while more and more renewable electricity is generated. Today in Berlin, WindNODE was awarded the title of "Landmark in the Land of Ideas” for 2018 in light of its contribution to the climate-neutral and renewable energy system of tomorrow.

Markus Graebig, general project manager for WindNODE, received the award together with Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Stromnetz Berlin. He was greatly pleased with the distinction: “In eastern Germany, already more than half of our electricity is generated from renewable sources. Here, the future of energy is already the present - with all its challenges and opportunities. In the living lab of WindNODE, we can develop and test model solutions that can make the energy transition a success story elsewhere as well. The award of ‘Landmark’ is a welcome acknowledgement of the commitment of our over 70 project partners.”

The nationwide competition "Landmark in the Land of Ideas" commends ideas and projects that are a beacon for Germany.   The objective is to put German innovations in the spotlight both domestically and abroad, and to strengthen the performance and sustainability of the area.

About WindNODE:

WindNODE is part of incentive scheme Showcase Intelligent Energy – Digital Agenda for the energy transition (SINTEG) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. It encompasses the six eastern German states, including Berlin, and is supported by the heads of state government of the participating states. Within WindNODE, over 70 partners will work together for a period of four years, from 2017 to 2020, to develop transferable model solutions for the smart energy system of the future. WindNODE demonstrates a network of flexible energy consumers who can align their consumption of electricity with the fluctuating offer of wind and solar power stations. The objective is the system integration of large volumes of renewable energy while also keeping the power grids stable. 50Hertz Transmission is the coordinator for WindNODE and one of the seven members of the steering group of the partner project, alongside Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, Energy Saxony, Fraunhofer FOKUS, SIEMENS, Stromnetz Berlin and the Brandenburg Economic Development Corporation (WFBB).

About SINTEG:

With the “Smart Energy Showcase - Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition” (SINTEG) incentive scheme, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) wants to show what the future of the electricity supply could look like. The idea of SINTEG consists in developing and demonstrating transferable model solutions for a safe, economic and environmentally friendly power supply despite the volatile generation of electricity from renewable energy sources. Adequate solutions from the model regions should be used as an example for a broad implementation in all of Germany and abroad. Partners from the energy industry as well as the information and communication sector cooperate in the five showcase regions. Since 2017, over 300 companies, research institutions, municipalities, districts and federal states work together on the implementation of the energy transition vision of the future.
