Expert forum on “Smart Neighbourhoods” at the 2019 Borderstep Impact Forum

Energy transition in buildings and city districts

© Rolf Schulten

On 21 May 2019, WindNODE partner Borderstep Institute will host the 2019 Borderstep Impact Forum. At this forum, the questions of the sustainable and true-to-course organisation of the digitisation will be discussed. The subject of the expert forum on “Smart Neighbourhoods” is the energy transition in buildings and city districts.

The building sector is responsible for approx. 35 % of the total German final energy consumption (dena 2019). It therefore plays an important role in the energy transition and the climate protection targets of the German federal government. The primary energy demand of buildings should be reduced by 80 % by the end of 2050. Which role does the digitisation play in this?

Digital and smart technology is already changing the energy and housing industry. It can lower the consumption of heat and electricity in buildings and at the same time increase the comfort of living. It contributes both to energy efficiency potentials and, through the integrated consideration of heat and electricity consumption in buildings, to flexibility and sector coupling. The digitisation in the building sector therefore also becomes a prerequisite for the growing share of renewables in the supply.

Many requirements are specified for smart districts. However, how large are the actual potentials for energy efficiency and flexibility in the German building sector? And how can digitisation help exploit these? Which new models and energy services can actually be implemented in the building sector and how sustainable are they?

These questions will be discussed at the expert forum from 2 to 4 pm.
