Showcasing smart energy systems from north-eastern Germany

The WindNODE joint project was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) from January 2017 to March 2021 as part of the "Smart Energy Showcase - Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition" (SINTEG) funding program. In 50 different sub-projects, more than 70 partners have been working on model solutions for the 100 percent renewable, smart energy system of the future. The sub-projects can be grouped into four overarching focus areas. The results from the focus areas are presented in these final publications:

Showcasing Smart Energy Systems (2017-2020)

After almost four years of research in the WindNODE showcase, we present the project results to you in the form of the WindNODE report 2020.

Here we present the WindNODE model region on 250 pages, guide you through the four focus areas (identifying flexibility, activating flexibility, digitalising the energy system and developing a reality lab) and classify the experiences with the regulatory experimentation clause SINTEG-V. Our project partners present you the exciting results from the 50 secondary workstreams and additionally there are overviews of the visitor sites, global activities and the exciting "Energy and Society" projects

Signature Paper: Summary report – Flexibility, markets and regulation

The summary report "Flexibility, markets and regulation: Insights from the WindNODE reality lab" is the third product of the internal synthesis of results after the "Best practice manual: Identifying flexibility options" and the WindNODE report 2020, and takes the different name-giving perspectives on renewable energy integration. In addition to the concrete use of flexibility options in practice, the theoretical flexibility potential in the WindNODE region is presented, new market-based mechanisms for flexibility procurement for grid congestion management are presented, and the regulatory framework is analyzed and reviewed for further development. The report addresses in particular the marketing options of flexible generators and consumers and highlights challenges and opportunities at the low voltage level, against the background of a further decarbonizing society.

Signature paper: Best practice manual - Identifying flexibility options

The "Best practice manual: Identifying flexibility options" is the first comprehensive product in the process of synthesis of results in WindNODE. It focuses on the individual identification and use of flexibility in organizations and companies. Individual tangible, concrete case studies of the WindNODE partners shine a light on successfully implemented application practices and processes of project work and invite to imitate them. The best practice manual thus serves as an important guide on the way to an intelligent energy system, and helps to optimize the integration and use of renewable energy from the residential area to the factory, while adjusting demand to the availability of local renewable energy.

Identifying Flexibility

One of the objectives of WindNODE is to identify where and how potentials for technical load shifting as well as for sector coupling can be found in northeastern Germany in order to make them available as flexibility within the energy system. A particular focus lies on industrial and commercial flexibility as well as flexibility in neighbourhoods and the mobility sector.  In addition to the technical integration, this includes the structured approach to convincing plant operators in the respective sectors to participate.

Activating Flexibility

In close cooperation between grid operators and flexibility providers, a market mechanism (flexibility platform) for utilising flexibility to the benefit of the grid is being demonstrated within the context of WindNODE. At the same time, the current regulatory framework is being analysed with regard to flexibility, and possible improvements are being drafted and evaluated with the help of scenarios. Concrete recommendations for action from WindNODE based on practical experience and theoretical considerations point the way to the energy system of the future.

Digitalising the Energy System

What are the information and communication technologies necessary to integrate large quantities of renewable energy into our energy system in a smart and efficient way? The WindNODE subprojects demonstrate, among other things, use cases for “iMSys”, the German variety of smart meter technology. We explore how the energy system can act as a matrix for digital value-added services. We investigate how energy data might be a driver for digital value creation and new business models. In addition, we strive to bring some order to the discussion around the grandiose phrase “digitalisation of the energy industry”, for example by differentiating between enabling the optimisation of already existing processes in the industry, and creating all-new value-added services.

Developing a Reality Lab

WindNODE is successfully making use of the new “reality lab” R&D format in northeastern Germany for the first time. In particular, this includes the implementation and use of the regulatory experimentation clause SINTEG-V, which is intended to allow SINTEG partners to test out new operating and business models without incurring economic losses due to the current regulatory regime. However, WindNODE is also committed to an ecosystem approach to energy research (large, agile partner networks spanning the value chain), to new participation formats (e.g. visitor sites) and to the development of a positive, opportunity-focused energy transition narrative.
